By now you should all know the great love I have for Asian Dramas and you know what they say? With every great love comes a great story…of pet peeves.
Any TV show or movie can provoke an array of emotions. The thing that distinguishes an Asian Drama from a regular TV show is the special list of irritating pet peeves that will have you pulling your hair out in twenty different ways. Yes, TWENTY.
5. Family Feuds
Having to withstand any villain in an Asian drama is a pet peeve in itself. However, nothing infuriates me more than watching a heroine/hero become tormented by a villainous family member.
Perfect example of this would be the twisted relationship between sisters Park-Ha and Se-na from the 2012 drama ‘Rooftop Prince’. Park-ha endures all that she can from her mean spirited sister but Se-na hits a new low when she starts moving in on Park-ha’s one true love.
I can only imagine what a family Christmas brunch would be like. Awks
4. Less “damsel in distress” - more Katniss
Do you remember that one drama where the leading lady saved not only herself but also everybody else? Yeah, neither do I. Now I’m not saying I want to see Jennifer Lawrence in an Asian drama (although that would be pretty awesome) but rather the characteristics of her ‘Hunger Games’ character Katniss. Oh how I long for an out-of-the-box thinker, strong willed and independent heroine.
I might get a lot of flak for saying this but Eun-sang from the hit drama ‘Heirs’ is one heroine I absolutely cannot stand. If I had a dollar for every time she gave up and cried, I would be an Heir myself. Eun-Sang had her fair share of hardships but instead of making lemonade, when life gave her lemons she squeezed it in her eyes and cried some more. Get it together girlfriend.
3. You are soooo mean to me. You must be the ONE.
Based on my extensive drama watching I’m going to say that 95% of time the nice guy will ALWAYS finish last. In reality, any person would be lucky to have a caring, nice and attractive true love. In drama land, this isn't the case.
As soon as a second lead male is introduced we immediately know he won’t get the girl in the end. Just like the J-drama 'Hana Yori Dango', I'll never understand why Makino did not pick Rui in the end. Oh that's right, Rui was too nice and in drama land being nice, caring and all those positive things will NOT get you the girl.
2. “Statue kissing”
You invest your time week after week watching an OTP develop their love story. Finally after what feels like an eternity they reveal their feelings for one another and then something amazing happens. They kiss and it’s the most unromantic kiss of all time. Are you kidding me? Do you know how unsatisfying that is? It’s like waiting all year for the MAMA awards only to find out your favourite idols aren’t even going to be there.
My favourite ‘statue kissing’ scene is from the 2004 K-drama ‘Fullhouse’. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought this was just a still photograph of a kiss.
1. Wrist grab + back hug = ultimate display of love
I can handle the occasional back hug and wrist grab but when I see both in one scene I will literally throw something at my computer screen. I will never understand how this combination makes drama watchers go all giddy inside. It’s even worse when it’s in slow-mo with epic music and the back hug/wrist grab goes on for a lifetime. Excuse me while I gouge my eyes out.

The "double-wrist grab"
I just can’t…
