Scarlett Johansson has been cast in "Ghost In The Shell", but she wasn't my first pick...

News of Scarlett Johansson signing up for a live-action adaption of “Ghost In The Shell” means a lot of things for fans of the franchise. Namely, that there is going to be a DreamWorks live-action adaption of “Ghost In The Shell”, but then comes the fear... will they do the original justice?

I should start by saying I really like Scarlett Johansson as an actress. [Even though she was married to one of my Hollywood boyfriends Ryan Reynolds] She's really come into her own as an action star, which is incredibly important if she's taking on the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi. But is she really the right fit for the role?

When I was casting for the live-action "Ghost In The Shell" roles in my head (because what else do you do at 2am in the morning), she was not my first choice. My first choice is...

Devon Aoki

Devon Aoki is pretty much always my first choice for every role; regardless of context. As Major Motoko Kusanagi she was perfect! As far as geek culture on film goes, she also has an impressive CV: from Sin City to X-Men.

Of course there are those whispers of her playing Katana in an X-Men movie, so if she isn't available, you would need a back up. That goes for fantasy boy/girlfriends too, which is why I will NEVER just choose one Arashi member as my favourite. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!

My next choice for Motoko Kusanagi would be....

Natsuna Watanabe

You may know her from the live-action adaption of "Gantz". She looked amazing as Megumi Kishimoto. In the event that she's done with action movies, that would leave me with my last but by no means least pick....

Rinko Kikuchi

You know her from "Pacific Rim" as Mako Mori and "47 Ronin" as the Witch. Not only has she proven herself physically in action roles, she was also able to show emotional range which is vital to being Motoko Kusanagi. On top of all that, she's already coloured her hair once for a movie, so she's pretty much ready to go!

(Sidenote- It’s the end of the world, where do you get blue hair dye like that? I’m just asking….for a friend).

Like I say, I like Scarlett Johansson even after she stole Ryan Reynolds off me, but she just wasn’t my first pick. I wish her the best in the role and I hope the movie encourages even more people to watch the anime.

What do you think? And do you have any thoughts on who could play the other characters in "Ghost In The Shell"?
