Cosplay season is upon us and it's time to start limbering up and getting into our characters for another year.

Another year, another chance to cosplay as your favourite character at a convention

It takes a lot of training, preparation and hours of watching anime. Cosplaying is practically like being an athlete (and one day they WILL let it into the Olympics - they’ll just HAVE TO!).

As an athlete knows, the best way to prepare for an event is to warm up and what better way than to go through some of the best known ‘anime poses’.

So enthusiastic it hurts!

There are few characters more enthusiastic in the face of utter defeat, than LoveLive! School Idol Project’s Honoka.  So enthuse yourself with this warm up pose. This is going to be EPIC!

Unimpressed with what’s happening here.

Time to get serious.

If you like your sullen characters this “I am not amused” anime pose is a must to perfect before the big day of your cosplay. From being Annie Leonhart from Attack On Titan to just generally showing your displeasure when someone says "But cosplay is just dress up, right?" No. cosplay is SERIOUS BUSINESS and this look proves it.

The Glasses Thing

Whether you're being the dreamy like Kyoya Ootori from Ouran High Host Club....

Or showing your displeasure with the glasses glare....

You need to perfect your 'glasses thing'. Also, even if you don't cosplay, but you wear glasses on a daily basis....This makes you look even cooler!

And then we can easily transition into our next pose.

Evil genius hand mask!

If you're going to be a dark figure in anime, you need to perfect what I call “the hand mask”. It’s the move you make over your face with your fingers held in a particular position.

Lelouch/Zero from Code Geass uses this pose quite a bit, take special note of how the fingers are held and where they are sit over the face.

I’m a particular fan of the “Dark Flame Master” pose from Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions.

Time to dial it down a little with the....

Evil without trying pose

Whether you’re just trying to perfect the art of being totally evil but still chillaxed about the whole thing, or warming down from all the extensive “hand mask” exercises, this Sebastian Michaelis move will have people checking out your awesome demon symbol while also making you look super cool.

Don't get too relaxed though.

“I will punish you!"

Enough of the bad guys, you’re going to punish everyone in the name of the Moon!

There are many heroic poses to choose from, but the Sailor Moon pose is a good place to start.

It may look simple enough, but these sorts of double-hand poses are difficult should be practised in the mirror first. And watch out for stabbing yourself in the eye with your own finger. (I totally didn’t do that…. Okay, I did that).

Once you master this move, it's time to let the happy flow through you....

“In LOVE!”

It may be hard to put actual hearts or diamonds in your eyes, or arrange for smoke to come out of your nose….

But love is part of life, especially when you're embarassingly infatuated with someone, so practising the basics of this move are important so that no matter the situation your Cosplay character will be a well-rounded individual.

And while we're about being all fluffy and loving.....

So cute!

Nico nico niiiii! Even if you'll never Cosplay a cute character, learning a character's 'routine' or catchphrase is an important step in becoming your character.

And finally…

The group pose of the guardians/soldiers in Sailor Moon is one of THE most recognisable anime poses. Whether you’re going as a group, or just one guardian, it’s important to know your pose and possibly the poses of the others too!  (If you Cosplay as a guardian, then you WILL be asked to pose).

You have now completed your Cosplay work out!

Be sure to Tweet us your favourite anime poses.
