Japanese idol and pop star Mayu Tomita, 20 was stabbed by a male fan repeatedly on Saturday night at around 5pm according to multiple reports.
Reports say that Tomita had told police she was concerned the suspect was stalking her. Tomita contacted police about a 27-year-old fan who started posting concerning comments about her on social media.
“A man named Iwazaki had been persistently sending her messages via her blog and Twitter account,” Japan Times reported.
She is currently in a critical condition in hospital.
Police sources have been reported as saying the fan was upset because Tomita returned a present that he had sent her without an explanation as to why.
Police were called to the scene and a folding knife with blood on it was found. Police said on Sunday that the stabbing took place in Western Tokyo. The victim is still unconscious after being stabbed nearly 20 times.
Tomita is a third-year university student who is working as an actor and pop star while she completes her studies.
Fans are sending their support for the J-Pop star on Twitter.
