After AKS – the group behind AKB48 franchise - announced that SNH48 has violated its contract and thus severed ties to the Chinese group, SNH48 defended itself as an independent organization.

In a statement, the Shanghai based group that owes its heritage to the Japanese franchise, said this:

"SNH48 is a fully independent, autonomous, large-scale female idol group native to China.”

The statement further explained that SNH48 was tied to AKB48 only on “a technical level,” and that music produced by SNH48 was original content. The fact that BEJ48 and GNZ48 (based in Beijing and Guangzhou) were created was thought to be signs of SNH8’s independent streak.

The statement explained:

"On April 20, 2016, SNH48 announced the establishment of its official sister groups BEJ48 and GNZ48, and also announced its strategy to create original music content. SNH48 has already started going down its own path.”
