Heyo, what’s up Internet?!
Man, I was HAVEN an amazing time over the weekend! Hey? Hey! Ahhh… I am not good at puns.
So here's my Haven Expo experience in a nutshell for you all to have a gander at.
Haven is a budding new con in small town, big-hearted Mackay, Queensland that I very recently had the pleasure of visiting.
I'd never been to Mackay so truthfully, I had no clue what to expect. I was asked to join a fleet of insanely talented cosplayers (and guests) as a judge, a panelist and all round cool dude.
Judge my first competition AND do my first panel? The word nervous springs to mind…
The whole Sydney team piled into a plane on the Friday morning to begin the journey. I am not very good when it comes to planes but I calmed my nerves by inducing candy by the truckload.
Luckily, I had an excellent travelling companion!
Dan, also known as Something Wicked Cosplay, joined me on my adventure to Mackay!
Sitting on the wing brought back Ace Ventura flashbacks, which actually made me giggle a bit to myself at the time. OKAY! So, fear of flying and Jim Carrey aside, we landed in Mackay and scoped out the convention hall.
It was awesome and I’m so sad I didn’t get a photo but let me paint you a picture with my imagination brush!
Imagine that you’re standing in an intimately sized room, the house lights are dim but a flurry of colour splashes the walls.
By the main stage, which is adorned with even more dazzling lights and projections, are two massive screens just off to each side that have upcoming game clips showing to get everyone excited to play.
There are rows and rows of video game consoles set up, all of which are watched over by a scale model of Claptrap from Borderlands!
There was so much to see in just one room of the MECC (Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre) and I honestly couldn’t believe how excited I was. The atmosphere was brilliant!
(Look at all these amazing people I got to hang out with!)
The night was particularly excellent for those who watch Critical Role with guests Matthew Mercer and Marisha Ray taking the stage to talk about the popular web series.
Sam Witwer also took to the stage later with the pair for a Story time panel.
Haven was brilliant for a number of reasons but a big part of it was the fact that they had created a family friendly session where kids and parents could experience the convention earlier in the day.
Another cool thing about haven is that the 18+ session ran late into the night, which meant people were free to party and play for longer.
And can I just say that the standard of cosplay was spectacular. As a judge, picking a winner was so difficult because everyone looked incredible!
I also got to do my first ever panel at a con! YAY!
I joined forces with Ardella, Major Sam, Rae Johnston and Eve Beauregard to talk about all things cosplay and what it’s like crafting here in Australia. It was, of course, super fun!
If you’d like to see more photos, head over to Sarah Easton’s FB page HERE.
Sarah took brilliant cosplay photos all night and shared them on her page so check them out!
So that’s all I can muster right now. It’s late and I have to go back to the real world tomorrow…
Haven was great. So great. I met some crazy new people and got to share what I love doing with others. Totally tops.
Tune in again soon because I’m sure there are some more cons and cosplays just around the corner.
Until then, I’ve been Lucky!
