***** UPDATE *****
Lasting just 45 seconds and containing nothing more than a few nonsensical lyrics (revolving around a pen, a pineapple, and an apple), Piko-Taro's "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)" has become the viral sensation of 2016. Not only did the parody song manage to (somehow) debut on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at No. 77 for the week of October 29, 2016, this achievement means that Piko-Taro is now a Guinness World Record holder!
Last Friday, Piko-Taro saw his song listed by Guinness as the shortest song to ever make it into the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, which was undoubtedly assisted by a ringing endorsement from Justin Bieber and has since been viewed over 400 million times across various online platforms
The unlikely Japanese pop-star attended the Guinness Award Ceremony at the foreign correspondents' club of Japan dressed in his now-famous Leopard-print "PPAP" shirt and trousers, and during the packed press conference, he stated that the reaction to "PPAP" has been nothing short of stunning and that he has Bieber to thank for its popularity.
“In the past I was accustomed to performing in front of audiences of between zero and one person. And then this happens … the internet is a wonderful thing.
I have the ‘Justin effect’ to thank, and I would love to see him do a cover!”
Piko-Taro also announced that he has landed a number of international record deals, which will see "PPAP" be digitally released across Asia and parts of Europe. As for how his profile has risen and the prospect of a future world tour, the singer has said that he's been relatively unaffected by his sudden fame before being realistic about the chances of a tour.
“It’s only been about a month since the song went viral ... to be honest I haven’t even received my first paycheck yet. Let’s face it, it’s my one and only song and it lasts less than a minute … do you seriously think anyone would come?”
In celebration of his new world record, Piko-Taro did the most appropriate thing that the Guinness press conference - perform "PPAP" live for those in attendance!
A huge congrats to Piko-Taro for this monumental - and somewhat unintentional - achievement!
The last few weeks has seen the whole world get caught up in the viral sensation that is "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)", and this has somehow translated into some major Billboard chart success!
Through the power of radio play, online streaming, and sales, Piko-Taro's goofy parody song has managed to make its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at No. 77 for the week of October 29, 2016.
The question now is could the song go higher? Given the viral nature of the song, perhaps we could be seeing (and listening) to some more "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) in the coming weeks!
