An extremely rare Pokemon trading card - named the "Pikachu Illustrator" - was sold for a record price of $US54,970 ($74,560)!

These days, most Pokemon trading cards usually go for around $10 a pack, and rare cards may hit the $50 or even the triple digit mark depending on its rarity. But for one particularly rare Pokemon card, it was sold for more than $50 - considerably more! 

in the wake of the recent popularity surrounding the Pokemon GO app, an extremely rare Pokemon card called the "Pikachu Illustrator" was sold at an auction for a whopping - and record-setting - $US54,970 ($74,560)! According to the auctioning company Heritage Auctions, only 39 copies of the card were ever made, and they were all given out in January 1998 to the winners of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest.

Of those 39 "Pikachu Illustrator" cards, only 10 are known to be in mint condition, and it is considered to be one of the most valuable and iconic Pokemon cards among trading card aficionados.
