2016 was a huge year for K-pop on the Billboard charts and leading the year-end charts are none other than BTS and GOT7, both of whom helped propel K-pop to its best annual performance on the Billboard charts yet!
BTS' smash hit album "WINGS" was a huge success upon release and this propelled it to No.6 on Billboard's year-end World Albums chart, giving the group their first entry. Not only was this the highest ranking K-pop album of the year, but it is the highest ranking K-pop ever, managing to edge out the previous record of No.8 held by EXO's "Exodus" album.
In addition to the success of "WINGS", BTS' "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2" album also came in at No.9, making the boys the first K-pop act to have two albums on the year-end World Albums chart.
The success of their albums has helped propel BTS to No.5 on Billboard's year-end World Albums Artists chart, making the group the highest charting K-pop artist ever on this chart, again snatching the record from EXO who peaked at No.7.
It's not just BTS who have had success on the Billboard charts this year though as GOT7 have also made a huge splash on the scene. GOT7 managed to come in just behind BTS at No.6 on the year-end World Albums Artists charts, which can be attributed to the success of their "Flight Log" albums.
Overall, the K-pop scene managed to have its best ever showing on the year-end World Digital Songs chart, with 17 songs landing on the chart from artists like BTS, Black Pink, PSY, 4Minute, NCT U, and EXO.
And finally, K-pop also hit new records on the year-end World Digital Songs Artists chart with six entries this year (BTS, EXO, GOT7, Black Pink, PSY, and BIGBANG), breaking the previous benchmark of five entries.
A huge congrats to BTS, GOT7, and all the K-pop artists who have managed to have so much Billboard success this year!
