With Assassin's Creed about to free-fall into cinemas, it seems appropriate to remind you of all the KILLER anime out there. Government grown soldiers, paintball playing hosts and highschool classes in assassination, anime has it all.
It should go without saying that most of these are not kid-friendly, so check the classification.
Aoharu x kikanjuu
Imagine if Haruhi in Ouran High School Host Club hadn't been forced to become a Host to pay off her debt, but instead got talked into joining a paintball team. This is that story.
While no one actually dies (OR DO THEY, they don't OR DO THEY?!) there's great shoot 'em up feels, some filthy jokes and general teenage angst. This one is on my current 'watch' list and I'm loving it.
Two lovable scamps who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and have now become guns for hire with hearts of gold, is almost exactly the opposite of what Gangsta is.
It's actually about two men who forged their friendship amidst abuse and bombs. Government grown soldiers, mercenaries, severed body parts and plenty of gunshots. Top it off with a killer (if you'll excuse the pun) soundtrack.
Kill La Kill
A girl uses a magical dress and half a pair of scissors to battle her arch enemy, in an attempt to avenge her father's death.
Akame ga Kill
Prepare your feels and your eyes because this is about to get bloody. It starts off, as all good anime does, with three friends setting out to save their impoverished village, ready to overcome all the obstacles life throws in their way because friendship overcomes everything.
Then there's a lot of blood.
Literally, the name should be enough of a giveaway. The students of 3E have to kill their tentacle monster teacher before he destroys the world.
Prepare for feeling things in that region where your heart is meant to go.
Set in a futuristic wonderland where you can be the avatar you want on the internet. You're also judged and sentenced based on your psychological wellbeing. CHEERY!
In the world of Pyscho-Pass everyone is monitored, which means no one should be able to commit a serious crime because it should be picked up before they actually become violent. So why is a serial killer on the loose?
A child solider joins a cadre operating under the instructions of a weapons dealer who is working towards world peace - sort of. There's even a touch of Norse mythology in this (obviously, with a name like Jormangand).
It is a full on anime, so you have been warned.
I know, I KNOW, I missed out Gunslinger Girls and so many others. You'll just have to tell me which ones I should be watching next in the comments :D
