Out of the many great anime films that were released in 2016, perhaps the most notable one to come out of Japan was Makoto Shinkai's critically-acclaimed anime film Your Name. Not only did it recently become China's No.1 earning film of all-time, the movie has kicked off 2017 with yet another record - the highest grossing anime film of all-time.

As of January 17, 2017 "Your Name" has grossed a whopping US$281 million worldwide (and counting), beating the previous box-office record of US$275 million set by Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away back in 2001.

While Your Name has overtaken Spirited Away in the worldwide box-office grossings, it still trails the Studio Ghibli classic in domestic grossing in Japan with 23.23 billion yen compared to 30.8 billion yen. Having said that, Your Name has been nothing short of a massive success in Japan and is currently the fourth highest-grossing film, the second-highest Japanese film, and the second-highest grossing anime film in the country.

A huge congrats to Your Name and Makoto Shinkai for all their success!

For those who haven't seen the film (or feel like watching it again!), you can watch it on SBS World Movies (Channel 32) on Wednesday 4 September at 9.05pm. It will also be available to stream after the broadcast on SBS On Demand.

It's the perfect warm-up for Shinkai's new film, Weathering With You, which is being released in Australian cinemas on Thursday 22 August 2019!
