In a surprise to her fans, popular Japanese actress and idol Fumika Shimizu has announced her retirement from the entertainment industry.

According to a statement from Shimizu's agent, the actress has decided to devote herself to the teachings of religious group Happy Science, a group that she's followed since she was a child, and have been unable to contact her since February 6.

Shimizu has since released a statement through Happy Science, saying that "[Shimizu] has worked in the industry for about eight years, and sometimes [She's] had difficulty as my heart was unable to accept what [she] had to do," before offering up an apology to her fans and staff for her "sudden disappearance."

Reports state that Shimizu has been ill recently, but will start her Happy Science activities upon her recovery and may even appear in movies produced by the group.

We're sad that Fumika Shimiza is no longer going to be on the big screen, but we wish her well in whatever she does in the future!
