DIA have announced they're making a comeback in April, but fans don't need to wait until then to hear their new single.
The girls already performed their new title track, “Wanna Date Me?”, back in December as part of their first solo concert, First Miracle. Originally just a future b-side, MBK Entertainment later decided to upgrade the tune to official single status after it received positive feedback from fans following the performance.
“Wanna Date Me?” marks another musical change for DIA, who have switched up their sound for every comeback since debuting with the Apink-ish “Somehow” back in 2015. This time around they're tackling the techno-trot genre, which is why “Wanna Date Me?” sounds a lot like a Crayon Pop or early Orange Caramel tracks.
I'm not quite sold on DIA sticking to such a cute concept, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love this track. It's a nice fit for DIA considering their labelmates, T-ara, incorporated trot influences into their music for the first half of their career. I can already see “Wanna Date Me?” pleasing Korean K-pop listeners and longtime T-ara fans, but it might have trouble winning over the majority of international K-poppers who will be looking for something edgier.
Anyway, DIA will officially be back in mid-April with their third mini-album. It’ll consist of 7-8 tracks, most of which will be either co-written or co-produced by the members themselves as a way to showcase the group’s true talent.
“Wanna Date Me?” follows last year's “Mr. Potter”, which unfortunately tanked on Korea’s Gaon chart at No. 103. However, their single before that, “On The Road”, fared much better by cracking the top fifty and selling over 130,000 digital downloads. The group has also had solid physical album sales since gaining attention through Produce 101, so it'll be interesting to see how their next comeback fares now that IOI are over.
