Every great K-pop group needs to have a direction, and that responsibility falls upon the shoulders of the leader. In celebration of International Women's Day, we've decided to go through the books and take a look at some of the best girl group leaders that have ever hit the stage.
So without further ado, here are 13 of the greatest girl group leaders, in no particular order.
13. Girl's Day's Sojin
Girl's Day's popularity speaks volumes about how well Sojin has lead the group!
12. Red Velvet's Irene
Irene is quite introverted and quiet compared to her other members, but she is ready to lend an ear and give support whenever the group needs it!
11. AOA's Jimin
She may not be on the forefront as Seolhyun or Choa, but Jimin has helped steer AOA from the group's initial obscurity to their success today!
10. GFriend's Sowon
GFriend has experienced a rapid rise in popularity over the last year, and much of this can be attributed to how well Sowon has managed to lead the group!
9. TWICE's Jihyo
It's hard to stand out in a group where everyone is as popular as each other, but Jihyo has managed to help TWICE become one of the most popular groups today!
8. MAMAMOO's Solar
You wouldn't know Solar is the leader given that MAMAMOO is filled with energetic beagles who love to tease each other all the time, but she's managed to lead the group through their rapid rise in popularity in fine style!
7. 4Minute's Jihyun
4Minute may have ended on a bit of a controversial note, but Jihyun showed her leadership qualities when she fought for the group right to the end, not to mention that all the members still remain close after all this time.
6. Brown Eyed Girls' JeA
Given that Brown Eyed Girls are the first girl group to not have any member changes for 10 years, it's a testament to how well JeA has helped lead the group!
5. SISTAR's Hyolyn
Hyolyn may be the main voice of SISTAR, but given how enduringly popular the group still are, it's obvious that she helps run a tight ship behind the scenes!
4. f(x)'s Victoria
Befitting of her ice queen reputation, Victoria can go from being serious when she needs to be to goofing around with Amber and Luna!
3. Wonder Girls' Yeeun
With a number of line-up changes, stylistic changes and various ups and downs over their 10 years together, Yeeun has stuck with the group throughout all the big moments, including stepping up as leader when Sunye left.
2. 2NE1's CL
She maybe known as K-pop's resident badass, but CL is also one of the most selfless and hard-working leaders out there. Case in point - during the 2011 Japanese earthquakes, she ran up 34 floors of a hotel just to rescue fellow 2NE1 member Dara. Now that's a great leader!
1. Girls' Generation's Taeyeon
Being thrust into the spotlight at a young age was tough on Taeyeon, but she's handled it brilliantly as Girls' Generation has since become K-pop's most popular girl groups in recent memory!
