There are many things to love about K-pop, but one of the most appealing things about the genre is the intricate dance choreography.
In an interesting new thread over on Reddit, K-pop fans got into a fascinating discussion about their favourite dance choreography. With Reddit being the home to a large number of fans who have diverse tastes and interests, the answers were certainly very interesting.
Here are some of what fans deem as the most impressive K-pop dance choreography:
obligatory windy day but lately I also really really enjoy watching the choreo for
Hear the Wind Sing by Gfriend - nothing too crazy here I just like the cute dance during the chorus. I love me some gfriend choreo.
Wee Woo by Pristin - another one that's maybe not super high on the technical scale but just a pleasure to watch. I especially like the part where they're all trying to get to pinky and the unnie line holds them back and then they all skip and follow her.
And finally, my favorite group to watch perform, Adore U, Mansae , Pretty U Very Nice and Boom Boom - I'm so impressed by how Seventeen make s a group so big look so fluid while dancing. Not all big groups can pull that off.
For most impressive its always Seventeen's for me. Just for how well they could utilize their many members. Its always fast paced, in sync, and the formations are ridiculously seamless.
As for recent, Up10tion's choreo for their japanese debut ID is so damn good. They're also one of the best big groups in terms of group dancing. Super sharp, super in sync.
Also really like Monsta X's Beautiful. Their dancing has gotten better, its so smooth.
My top 6:
BTS's Dope - This song literally brought me back into kpop from a several year hiatus. Of BTS's hype songs, Dope still wins it for me. The footwork is awesome and it's one of my favorite choreographies to see covered by other groups.
Bigstar's Full Moon Shine - Very slick and sharp. The members are well-synchronized with great musicality.
VIXX's Fantasy - Keone Madrid is so amazing. Never really looked up what the song is about, but the choreo expresses crazed despair really well.
NCT U's 7th Sense - An obvious choice. Almost feels as if the song were made for the choreo instead of the other way around.
EXO's Growl - Simple but strong choreo.
SHINee's Replay - An oldie but goodie.
SHINeeee is king of fun, deceivingly difficult choreo with so much originality it's hard not to smile. Married to the Music, Sherlock, View and Lucifer are my favorites.
I also really loved NCT 127's Fire Truck. That bird call at the end. 👌🏻 A common thread here is the choreographer Tony Testa who has worked a lot with Shinee and NCT.
Red Velvet also never fails to disappoint when it comes to funky moves. It helps having Seulgi, who could crawl across the stage and I'd stand up and applaud. Definitely one of the best idol dancers in the game. The execution of a choreography is just as if not more important than the movement itself.
SuJu's Sorry Sorry, imo, is the most iconic. It's extremely memorable and satisfying to dance along with. It's probably why I could stand the song in the first place, and now I love the song dearly. Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun.
BEAST's Fiction is another classic (not necessarily my fave, but beast got me into kpop so SO to the homies)
Luna's Free Somebody was FIRE I don't need to elaborate in that one, talk about good execution ...
NCT U's The 7th Sense -- Can't have this thread without mentioning this one. It doesn't really have a "point" choreography but it's still incredibly memorable. Here was a great analysis of some of the moves by /u/tastetherainbeau that really shows the intricacy in the moves. I still rewatch this video all the time and I never get bored. NCT in general has had a lot of exceptional dance pieces (I also really enjoy Firetruck and My First and Last's dances)
BTS' Blood Sweat and Tears -- I love this dance and title track. I loved that the choreography was overtly sexual but not gaudy (well, most of the time... maybe the group pelvic thrust in a circle is a little much) I also love the dramatic covering eyes motif. Symbolic.
TWICE's TT -- No it's not hard, no it's not exceptionally impressive, but goddammit it's the first choreography I learned all the way though, SO yes I bust it out whenever I can. The whole world has been Like TT since October 2016 and IMO that proves that not every choreography NEEDS to be mindblowingly difficult; in fact, a simple fun choreo is sometimes just what the masses want in order to feel like they can dance along lol
NCT U's 7th Sense is amazing! Another one I enjoy is GOT 7's If You Do and more recently Never Ever.
Are solo's also acceptable? Because Taemin's Drip Drop and Press Your Number are so good. I don't know anyone else that can pull those moves.
For girl group's, Red Velvet's Dumb Dumb is still one of my favorites.
SHINee's Sherlock is one of the best things ever. No, it's not exceptionally fast-paced or anything too wild, but it's still really cool! It's just so emblematic of the entire mood and vibe of the song, and it really shows off how great everyone in SHINee is at dancing. Also, the 2X speed Weekly Idol version is so much fun.
Wonder Girls' Why So Lonely. Again, it's nothing fast-paced or hard-hitting, but it does such a good job of capturing the mood of the song very well. They're very expressive and intentional in their movements and that's what I like so much about it.
- So many of SNSD's choreography sticks out to me but my all-time favorite is Mr Mr, specifically this performance of it because everyone looks real good and damn impressive. It was like one of the first things I watched by them and I still like watching it every week. Runners' up are Flower Power, Genie, I Got a Boy, Wait a Minute, ITNW (and the remix version someone already linked), and You Think. Speaking of You Think and how bomb Seohyun was, Magic's choreography fits the song entirely too well. It's so...I honestly don't know how to describe it because it just leaves me dumbfounded every time.
