Minzy, the maknae of 2NE1, was the first member to leave the super group before their eventual disbandment. Luckily, the talented star found a new agency and quickly signed a deal with The Music Works (home of the legendary Baek Ji Young) to begin her solo career.

The 23-year-old has now released her first album, the six-track EP Minzy Work 01. "Uno," and it does not disappoint. She worked with a variety of producers for the project, many of whom are from Europe and America, which tells you a lot about the sound she’s going for. The commercial, Western sound of Minzy’s mini-album isn’t a huge surprise considering 2NE1 were famed for their American top forty beats.

On catchy lead single “Ni Na No,” Minzy makes the most of her incredible skills as a dancer by creating the perfect club banger for her to showcase her choreography. Despite being very mainstream, the track is still unique thanks to its use of tribal rhythms, strings, and hip-hop, proving that Minzy is determined to find her own signature style now that she’s solo.

Track two “Superwoman sounds like an American radio hit right off the bat. Produced by the same team behind Aaron Carter’s recent comeback, “Superwoman” recalls The Chainsmokers’ radio-friendly hits and features an instrumental hook made up of trendy tropical house music.

On the Stereotypes-produced ING, Minzy incorporates a refreshing pop-meets-reggae vibe, while “Flashlight” has a synthy, urban sound that’s prominent in a lot of Korean R&B.

While dance music and urban-pop dominate most of the album, Minzy still manages to show that she’s more than just a dancer by belting her heart out on the power ballad “Beautiful Lie.” With its sweeping strings and lush piano melodies, “Beautiful Lie” sounds like a David Foster track, which will no doubt please a lot of Minzy’s core audience.

Overall, Minzy has perfectly executed her solo debut. The songstress was savvy enough to maintain the general sound that worked so well with 2NE1, while also putting her own spin on it to create something that is totally her own. Not only will Minzy 'Work 01. "Uno"' be a hit with fans in Korea, it should also please listeners across the world.
