Based on Mary Stewart’s children’s book, The Little Broomstick, Mary and the Witch’s Flower follows a young girl; Mary, who discovers she is a witch for a night. The animation and artistic flair reminds us of Howl’s Moving Castle and When Marnie Was There, with themes of a young witch and self-discovery relating to Kiki’s Delivery Service.
The film will be directed by former Studio Ghibli director (Arriety, When Marnie Was There) Hiromasa Yonebashi, and produced by Studio Ponoc founder and former Studio Ghibli film producer (Howl’s Moving Castle, When Marnie Was There and The Tale of Princess Kaguya) Yoshiaki Nishimura.
The voice of Mary will be played by 19-year-old actress, Hana Sugisaki. Mary will be her first voiced role, having previously starred in live-action films such as, Her Love Boils Bathwater, Mozu the Movie, and the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Blade of the Immortal.
Studio Ponoc was founded in April 2015 by a former Studio Ghibli staff. They have yet to announce a western localisation for the film, but it will begin screening in Japanese cinemas on July 8.
