From sold out concerts around the world to acclaim from fans and critics everywhere, BTS are perhaps the biggest K-pop group in the world at the moment. Having started from the ground up with Big Hit Entertainment, the rapid rise of BTS has been closely followed by many within in industry, but for Big Hit CEO Bang Shi Hyuk, he isn't letting all this success get to his or BTS' head.
In a new interview with Korean outlet OSEN (and translations thanks to Peachissoda), Bang Shi Hyuk talked at length on a variety of topics, ranging from the secret of BTS' success to how the members have changed, creatively and personally, over the years.
When asked about what the secret behind BTS' success was, Bang Shi Hyuk earnestly replied with a simple "I'm honestly not sure" before pointing to various aspects that could've played a part, such as BTS performances, the personal stories told through their music, the relability of their songs, their social media presence, and managing to adjust to the ever changing musical trends.
Creatively, BTS are very involved with the creation of their own music and managing their own social media accounts, something that Bang Shi Hyuk says was intentional. The Big Hit CEO stated that "[Big Hit] keep the members free" when it comes to their own social media accounts, not only because the boys are well in tune with how to use social media but also because of Big Hit's relative inexperience with the medium.
As for the music side of things, aside from reviewing BTS' songs after the boys have worked on them, Bang Shi Hyuk states that the group have creative freedom to do what they want for their music, saying that "it's not right for [Big Hit] to interfere with their music" and that "the members' intention is the most important thing."
Finally, when asked about BTS' rapidly rising international popularity, Bang Shi Hyuk expressed his surprise at how big the group are worldwide, saying "We really didn't imagine this" and that "BTS style performance looks like KPOP synchronizing group choreography while combining the trending performances of the US" as a way of explaining their success.
It's been very exciting to see BTS rise rapidly through the ranks over the past few years, and we're very excited to see what the boys and Big Hit have in store for the future.
