iKON only have one album in almost two years under their belt, but they've become popular enough to sell out dome concerts in Japan. While some of this has to be credited to YG Entertainment, which comes with a huge built-in fanbase for every artist it debuts, iKON’s own appeal can't be discredited. Their raucous, bad boy image has won them plenty of fans and made them the perfect counterbalance to their more sophisticated labelmates, WINNER.
Much like WINNER did in April, iKON finally made their long-awaited comeback this week with a 2-track single called New Kids: Begin. Is the title supposed to mark a new beginning for the boys? If so, it's not reflected in the music, which is the signature iKON style that fans have come to know and love.
“Bling Bling,” which sounds like a hip-hop version of BIGBANG’s “Bang Bang Bang,” is a YG lover’s dream. It's a real party starter, with swagtastic rapping from iKON.
The boys add some ferocious electro beats to their hip-hop sound on the other new single, “B-Day.” It's another party anthem, with a fist-pumping chorus and lyrics about popping bottles and celebrating like it's your birthday.
The two music videos are slick, polished affairs. They admittedly follow a somewhat generic K-pop MV formula, but they're both done well and really showcase iKON’s choreography and unique sense of style.
It's safe to say that fans will definitely be satisfied with iKON’s long overdue comeback. It's the perfect companion to WINNER’s recent Fate Number Four single and serves as a reminder of just how talented YG’s current roster is. With BIGBANG headed for the military soon, it's nice to know that groups like WINNER and iKON are around to fly the YG flag.
