A focus on the big J-pop developments in this week’s SBS PopAsia J-Pop roundup…
Ladybeard’s latest musical endeavor, DEADLIFT LOLITA, returns with a new number, which you can check out below. There's not too much musical experimentation because DEADLIFT LOLITA stick to what they do best — heavy-metal guitar chugging, throaty shouting transforming into cutesy sing-a-long. When you do something well, keep at it.
EXILE THE SECOND
Apologies to you guys entering winter, but here in Japan summer has arrived. And with it comes the jams built for the warmer months. EXILE THE SECOND served up one of the season’s first big, bright pop numbers with “Summer Lover,” a disco-tinged number building up to a big shimmering hook. The short video (below) finds the group dancing on the beach and generally soaking up the rays, indulging in summer activities such as being on a boat, sitting on a jet ski and...uh, shopping at the supermarket.
AKB48 General Election
Biggie-sized idol group AKB48’s latest single arrived in stores this week, and with it come the ballots for this year’s general election, an annual event determining who the most popular performer in the AKB-verse is. The first preliminary poll - if you are new to this, it is serious business - provided a shock: Yuka Ogino of fledgling sister group NGT48 placed first, which nobody saw coming, even when only 24 hours are taken into account. Like all democratic processes, this immediately lead to allegations of voter fraud. Strap in folks!
In the wake of the attack at Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester last week, J-Pop outfit GENERATIONS announced they would be cancelling a small European tour set for July. Stops in London and Paris have been cancelled, with no plans for future visits to those cities at the moment.
In one week’s time, this space will be noting the crazy amount of singles from AKB48, as part of their annual election...This week, the Oricon singles chart is topped by, an animated idol group. THE IDOLM@STER CINDERELLA GIRLS take the top spot, while on the album side of things, AKB official rival Nogizaka46 went to number one. Well, OK, maybe the trend is starting now.
Video Of The Week
It’s starting to feel like DADARAY is making a big leap forward. The group, featuring bassist Kyujitsu Kacho of Gesu No Kiwami Otome., has been improving with each song, and this week’s “Breeze In Me” is the latest highlight. Check it out below.
