PENTAGON are one of the most talked about new boy groups of the past year, and rightfully so. The ten-member act are from Cube Entertainment, who were behind HIGHLIGHT (formerly B2ST) and BTOB. This means that PENTAGON have big shoes to fill, and luckily they’re doing a great job so far.
Up until now, PENTAGON have been known for their hip-hop style. However, the boys switch things up a bit on Critical Beauty, with the lead single from their latest album, "Ceremony."
“Critical Beauty” opens with retro 1950s rock guitars, which is something rarely ever heard in K-pop. It’s not until the song hits the chorus that a hip-hop style kicks in, making it a unique fusion of two totally different genres. It’s really interesting to see a new group trying out a different musical approach, and it gives the impression that Cube really wants PENTAGON to stand out in the crowded K-pop scene.
Even the styling and music video are unique, with a circus setting and a twins concept that sees some of the members dressed alike.
If “Critical Beauty” is a bit too different for you, there’s plenty of other more mainstream songs on the rest of Ceremony. “Lucky” is a real standout, with a smooth, synthesized R&B sound that’s a lot like the music from Triple H’s 199x album. PENTAGON also do the same sound, but with a modern twist, on “Nothing.”
Proving just how talented they are, members Jinho and Hui team up for the powerful piano-driven vocal ballad “Thank You.” Also included is the band’s powerful pre-release single “Beautiful,” produced by none other than BTOB's Ilhoon.
However, the song that fans will really love is “To Universe.” The acoustic ballad is dedicated directly to PENTAGON’s fan club, Universe, proving just how appreciative the band is to everyone that supports them.
Longtime listeners of PENTAGON will definitely enjoy Ceremony, and due to the interesting production on the lead single, some new people might just join the fandom too.
