Same driving riffs and workout-centric lyrics, new biggie-sized scope.

How do you go about adding a jolt to something familiar? Ladybeard’s DEADLIFT LOLITA idol project has, by now, established a formula; he and Saiki Reika sing and shout (like, guttural shouting) over chugging metal riffs, which eventually give way to more colorful hooks that seem closer to J-pop.

It works, but sometimes you need to add some pizazz in to keep things fresh. Latest number “Muscle Cocktail” does just that.

The video really does the (cough) heavy lifting here, so watch it above. This time around, DEADLIFT LOLITA don’t simply plunge into the song, but rather spend some time creating an air of epicness before diving in. Of course, this is drama designed for the Muscle Milk crowd, so the extended intro is about the process of getting stronger and features footage of them training over Michael-Bay-worthy music. “We too must be torn apart, and then...grow closer.” With this, then the familiar riffing and screaming come in.

Ladybeard’s other change-up comes with his verses, which are sung in English. Surprise...they are about working out. But it still adds something different to “Muscle Cocktail,” and helps make the zippy chorus bounce around your head. Sometimes, it’s the small details that make the familiar sound novel once again.

The group recently wrapped up a few appearances in the United States, showing that their approach to cute-meets-heavy is spreading further than just Japan. Let’s see what the jacked-up pair think up next.
