Here are 10 idols who have proven they have some serious talent in acting:
1. Yook Sungjae (BTOB)
Sungjae gained immediate popularity after he secured the lead role in Who Are You: School 2015. When the show ended he went on to receive several endorsement deals. He won the New Star Award for his work in Village: Achiara’s Secret and recently starred in Guardian: The Lonely and Great God with Gong Yoo, which was a huge success.
2. D.O. (EXO)
In 2014 D.O. made his acting debut for the movie Cart as a supporting member of the cast. In 2015 he appeared in the drama Hello Monster playing a psychopath, which was highly praised by critics and netizens. He is currently working on two movies; Room No. 7 and Swing Kids where he plays the lead role.
3. Kim Hyun-joong (Former SS501)
Hyun-joong had a dream start to his acting career, starring in the popular romance drama Boys Over Flowers, which he won the Best Actor Award for at Seoul International Drama Awards in 2009. He then went on to star in the drama Playful Kiss, which was also broadcast in China due it’s massive popularity. Kim Hyun-joong's fame rose further when he was interviewed by CNN.
4. Hyeri (Girl’s Day)
Hyeri started acting in 2012 when she played the youngest in a family of four daughters for drama Tasty Life. She had her breakthrough, in 2015, playing a role in drama Reply 1988,which broke the record for most viewed drama on a cable network. She received critical acclaim for her role and is now working on her first female movie lead for the film Monster, which began filming in April 2017.
5. T.O.P (BIGBANG)
T.O.P became the first member from BIGBANG to start acting, he started off on the drama I Am Sam playing the school's top fighter. It was his work in 71: Into the Fire where he began turning heads with his acting earning him several Best New Actor awards. Since then he's become the lead actor on films Commitment, Tazza: The Hidden Card and Out of Control.
6. Yoona (Girls Generation)
Im Yoona's acting career rose when she starred in her first leading role for You Are My Destiny, which gained her two Best New Actress awards. In 2012 she starred in Love Rain alongside Jang Geun Suk and although the drama received lower ratings than expected, Yoona’s acting received positive praise. Yoona’s popularity in China helped her land the lead role in Chinese drama God of War, Zhao Yun and she is currently working on her film debut playing a supporting role in Confidential Assignment, which is set to release later this year.
7. Suzy (Miss A)
Bae Suzy was one of the many idols to make their acting debut with drama Dream High. But it was her role in Architecture 101, playing the younger version of the protagonist, that put her in the limelight after the film's incredible success. She then went on to star in Gu Family Book with Lee Seung-gi, which had strong ratings and won her the Outstanding Actress award at the Seoul International Drama Awards. Suzy’s currently working on a new drama called While You Were Sleeping, which is set to release in September.
Rain’s acting got noticed when he starred in the drama Full House, which had strong ratings, and earned him the Best New Actor award at the KBS Drama Awards that year. In 2008 Rain went to Hollywood starring in Speed Racer and then Ninja Assassin in 2009 where he landed the main role in an American film; he was the first ever Korean-born actor to do so. Since then he’s starred in The Prince alongside Bruce Willis and has had success acting in China.
9. Uee (Former After School)
In 2009 Uee made her acting debut in Queen Seondeok, which earned various awards. Her acting career blossomed in 2011 when she had two lead roles for television dramas Birdy Buddy and Ojakgyo Family. In total Uee has starred in thirteen dramas, eight of which she had a leading role. While she has yet to hit the big screen I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
10. Hyungsik (Z:EA)
Park Hyungsik’s first role was in drama I Remember You back in 2012. In 2014 he was cast in weekend family drama What’s With This Family, which earned him a nomination for a Best Newcomer award. Recently Hyunsik starred in his first lead role for drama Strong Woman Do Bong-soon which increased his popularity.
