San Diego Comic-Con happened this past weekend, and one of the biggest pieces of news to come out of the convention — at least for those who follow Japanese pop culture and music — was that metal-meets-pop trio BABYMETAL will be providing the theme song to a new cartoon set to air on Cartoon Network sometime in the near future.

The show stars Unikitty, a colourful and perpetually upbeat unicorn-feline hybrid that originally appeared in The Lego Movie back in 2014. Cartoon Network have ordered the series and have already previewed the first episode of the animated series at Comic-Con, which was where it became known that BABYMETAL would be providing the theme song for the show.

Naturally, BABYMETAL fans geeked out about this collaboration and within a matter of hours, fan-art began popping up on social media.

No footage of the song itself has emerged yet — props to fans not leaking stuff! — so fans will just imagine what it sounds for now. It isn’t the first time a Japanese band has contributed a theme song to a Cartoon Network show, though.

PUFFY (then known as PUFFY AmiYumi) provided the opening number for the show Teen Titans back in the day, which also lead to the group getting their own series. At this point, it is noting BABYMETAL are also reportedly getting a cartoon, though details remain scarce.
