From the gritty anarchic look of their "Monster" era to suave suits during awards season, EXO have rocked a number eye-catching looks over the years, and this has prompted renowned fashion publication Vogue to ask a big question - is EXO the most stylish K-pop band of all time?
Praising EXO as the leading K-pop boy group currently active after winning 5 daesangs last year and performing to sold-out crowds at Seoul's massive Olympic Stadium earlier this year, Vogue notes that the group's recent comeback with their new album "The War" and their new single "Ko Ko Bop" is crucial for the future.
Noting that each EXO member will have to enlist in the army as part of their mandatory military service and thus risk losing momentum, Vogue states that the tropical aesthetic adopted for their comeback this time around highlights how the group is managing to stay relevant by pushing the boundaries of K-pop men's fashion.
Vogue notes that "Ko Ko Bop" reimagines the 8 members as "younger, more fashion-forward" versions of Dickie Greenleaf from The Talented Mr. Ripley, and this has been the culmination of 2 years of EXO slowly honing in on their fashion sense, beginning with 2015's "Call Me Baby."
Before "Call Me Baby," Vogue points out that EXO were generally clothed in matching suits or tees that made each member indistinguishable from one another. But "Call Me Baby" saw a shift in what each member wore as the group started sourcing for big name designers, not to mention greater elements of personalisation. But rather than go straight for the usual high-end fashion brands - such as Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent - EXO decided to go for some brands loved by fashion people, such as Pieces by Raf Simons, Dries Van Noten, archival Helmut Lang, as well as items from Korean designers.
What this has resulted in is each EXO member managing to push the boundaries of K-pop men's fashion, all while managing to maintain their individuality
