Haruo Nakajima, the Japanese actor most famous for portraying the iconic movie monster Godzilla in the original 1954 Japanese classic film, has passed away.

In a statement from Nakajima's daughter, the actor passed away on Monday aged 88 due to pneumonia.

Best known for creating and portraying the title creature in the 1954 Japanese classic film Godzilla, Nakijima was just a 25-year-old unknown stunt actor before he was cast. Donning a heavy rubber suit and taking inspiration from how animals move, Nakijima created Godzilla's movements from scratch and his portrayal is still praised by critics as the most memorable performance of the monster so far.

Nakajima would ultimately portray Godzilla a total of 12 times from 1954 to 1972, a period in which the monster and the franchise would become a worldwide phenomenon.

Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Haruo Nakajima.
