It's been a roller coaster year for YOSHIKI of long-running rock outfit X Japan.

The first few months started off fine, with their documentary We Are X still gaining attention after coming out last year. Then the drummer needed emergency surgery on his back, forcing him to cancel several shows and having to reconsider headbanging. Now, 2017 is looking up for the Japanese rock icon - YOSHIKI graces the cover of the October issue of Vogue Japan, becoming the first Japanese man to ever appear on the magazine’s cover.

The issue goes on sale August 28. It’s Vogue Japan’s “Rock Star” issue, which goes a long way to explaining how YOSHIKI landed this cover. The photo shoot, conducted by the duo Luigi and Iango, happened shortly after YOSHIKI’s emergency surgery, making it his first real duty post operation. YOSHIKI himself described the session as, “very stimulating.” Watch a teaser clip for the issue below, featuring YOSHIKI and co-cover-star Mica Argañaraz.

On the music side of things, X Japan don’t have any tour dates coming up, but YOSHIKI himself has several “EVENING WITH YOSHIKI” performances in Japan starting this week and lasting until early September. Stay tuned to see what he and the band get up to in 2018.
