Do you love Nicholas Cage? Like, you can quote National Treasure at great length, and unironically think The Wicker Man was good? Well, Japan has the snack for you. Coinciding with the release of last year’s Army Of One, select theaters in country will give ticket buyers corn snacks featuring the actor’s bearded face on the packaging.
As reported by domestic media, and quickly aggregated by other sites across the world, a few theaters (i.e. the only ones showing the film) in major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka will offer the corn snack, featuring Cage on the packaging as the main character from Army Of One. It’s actually a special partnership — the snack is an Umaibo, a famous stick-shaped treat available in grocery stores and convenience stops all over the nation. The flavour itself isn’t all that unique, either. It’s corn pottage, offering up a vaguely hearty rendition of the titular vegetable.
Strongest argument against shelling out money to watch the movie for the sole purpose of scoring some Cage-adorned snackfood? Umaibo cost about 10 cents regularly. Again, you either really want to see Army Of One or you're a deep Cage head.
If you're looking for a less pricey way to enjoy the intersection of Nick Cage and Japan, I would recommend checking out the below collection of Japanese commercials he appeared in over the years. Ultimately, if you are seeking out something “strange” involving an actor who is more meme than man at this point, watching him shill for pachinko in ads that really do defy context beats out cross-promotional wrappers.
