Yep, it happened, “PPAP” mastermind Piko Taro met U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week.
The pair met at a State Dinner held Monday night in Tokyo. The gathering served as the finale to Trump’s first visit to Japan as the Commander In Chief, a two-day visit featuring a lot of golf, burgers and dumping fish food into a koi pond. The dinner featured speeches about policy and relationships between the U.S. and Japan...But we're here for J-pop interactions.
Piko Taro was invited to the dinner because he and his brief-but-catchy hit were among the first things Trump and Abe talked about at a meeting last year after the U.S. presidential election. Trump’s granddaughter also loved the song, and Ivanka Trump shared a video of her singing it online. The two had a brief conversation and photo op (above).
The move was criticised by a handful of people, most prominently performer Akiko Wada, who said their were far more important things for these diplomats to deal with than celebrities. Twitter reaction was split; some criticising Piko Taro for meeting with Trump, but others seeing that as one of the highlights from this event. In the end, Piko Taro took it all in stride.
