J-pop star Ayumi Hamasaki found herself embroiled in internet controversy recently after she donned a jacket featuring the Japanese Rising Sun Flag at a concert. South Korean netizens expressed their outrage online, leading Hamasaki to take down a video of said performance from her Instagram.
The incident occurred at a show in early November. Hamasaki put on a jacket that one of her backup dancers was wearing, which happened to feature the Rising Sun Flag prominently on the right side of the front.
Following a story on South Korean website My Daily, netizens expressed outrage at Hamasaki for the brazen clothing move. The flag is associated with Japan’s colonisation of South Korea from 1910 to 1945.
Hamasaki acted quickly, taking the offending video down, and then uploading a second clip of the same moment, with the flag digitised out. She apologised for the re-upload.
Korean netizens remained split following Hamasaki’s swapping out of the first clip; some remained angry, while others accepted it and moved on.
