It's a new year and with it, a bunch of new Anime! From childhood nostalgia to a new absurdist comedy. Here are the ones to look out for...

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card is a sequel to the famous Cardcaptor Sakura anime from the 90s by Madhouse (Hunter x Hunter 2011, Land of the Lustrous). Set immediately after the events of the original series, Sakura and friends are reunited at Tomoeda Middle School and her life as Cardcaptor Sakura is all but in the past. However, after a bizarre dream where a mysterious mage wipes her deck of monster cards, transforming them into clear cards, Sakura sets out trying to restore them.

Junji Ito Collection

A collection of the best short stories from legendary horror mangaka Junji Ito (Uzumaki, Tomie, Gyo). Animated by Studio Deen (Vampire Knight, Fruits Basket), the series adapts the famous femme fatale tale of Tomie, Voices in the Dark, Fragments of Horror and more. The first episode follows Soichi, a high school student with an obsession with cursing his classmates for disrespecting him, and a young girl turned grotesque doll.

A Place Further Than the Universe

Another Madhouse production and an original TV anime, A Place Further Than the Universe follows the journey of a group of high school girls travelling to Antarctica. After admitting she wants to live the most of her youth and tries to bludge class and not go to school one day, perfect student Mari bumps into a beautiful and mysterious girl from her class called Shirase. Mari discovers Shirase has saved a million yen in hopes of travelling to Antarctica, and decides to help her achieve her goal.

Pop Team Epic

Pop Team Epic is an incredibly quirky and absurd comedy series about two young girls: the smaller and short fused Popuko, and the tall and calmer Pipimi. Based on bkub Ookawa’s four cell manga series of the same name, Pop Team Epic is filled with references to pop culture and meta humour, with the first episode making references to Your Name, My Neighbor Totoro, Final Fantasy and Kemono Friends to name a few. A must for fans of Nichijou, Arakawa Under the Bridge or Kaiba.
