Netflix are producing a live-action Sword Art Online TV series starring Asian actors.

According to Executive Producer Laeta Kalogridis (Altered Carbon, Avatar), neither she or the company are interested in whitewashing the cast of a newly announced Sword Art Online live action film.

“SAO is an essentially Japanese property, in which Kirito and Asuna, who are the two leads, are Japanese,” She explained in an interview with Colider. “The television show, Kirito and Asuna will be played by Asian actors.”

“[Netflix] are not interested in whitewashing and I am not interested in whitewashing it.”

While Kalogridis acknowledged that secondary characters like Klein and Agil are from other parts of the globe and likely to be played by non-Asian actors, she stressed that, “Kirito and Asuna are very clearly located as kids from Japan.”

“That is what we will be doing because that is the story,” she continued. “They are, in my mind anyway, much like Major Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, defined in part by being seminal characters in an Asian piece of art.”
