J-pop talent agency Johnny & Associates, often referred to just as Johnny’s, announced Monday morning their plan to launch an official YouTube channel devoted to their Johnny’s Jr. groups. It’s the first time the company, which is responsible for top-level pop acts such as Arashi, Kanjani8 and more, has created an official presence on a social media platform. Watch the announcement video below.
The channel launches on March 21. It will feature content from the stable of Johnny’s Jr. groups, referring to acts that have not yet properly debuted in Japan (which is to say, they aren’t with a label yet). New content will be posted almost every day from one of five groups that have nominated themselves to take part in the channel. The participating groups are HiHi Jet, Tokyo B Shounen, SixTONES, Snow Man and Travis Japan. Besides musical uploads, expect behind-the-scenes footage and other clips revealing new dimensions to the performers.
The channel will be available globally, so anyone can watch regardless of where they are, which is often a hurdle for many hoping to check out J-pop. Fans of Johnny’s are, understandably, excited.
Johnny’s is known for making videos of their performers hard to access online. They've kept photos and album artwork off the internet. While they have lightened up a bit over the last year, this marks the first time Johnny’s has actually embraced the internet rather than shuffle around it.
This move could signal the beginning of more people getting to know one of J-pop’s biggest companies. Stay tuned to see what they share on the channel later this month.
