In K-pop we honestly don’t see enough collaborations by artists from different entertainment companies.
Here are times when idols from have worked together and absolutely slayed it!
HIGH4 and IU
HIGH4 had the dream start to their career being able to work with IU on their debut song “Not Spring, Love or Cherry Blossoms”. The results were incredible with the song reaching number one on the Korean Gaon Charts and selling over two million copies.
Rania (After School) and San E
Rania and San E combined for an unexpectedly smooth hit “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness” back in 2014. Rania shows off her honey like vocals while San E lays down his tight raps that he’s known for. The two would collaborate again in 2016 with yet another summer jam “Sugar and Me”.
Baekhyun (EXO) and Suzy
Getting Baekhyun and Suzy to work on a song wasn’t easy according to Park Geun-tae, one of the composers. It took around one year to be able to get the two together and record the song but it was definitely worth the wait with the song winning multiple awards including ‘Best Collaboration’ at the 18th Mnet Asian Music Awards.
Mino (WINNER) and Zico (Block B)
Before these two were idol singers, they were both a part of the underground rap scene in Korea. It was when Mino entered Show Me The Money 4 that they would be reunited with Zico being his producer on the show. Their song “Okey Dokey” became an anthem in the hip-hop community and the music video displays their close friendship together.
Ailee, Hyolyn (former SISTAR) and Jessi
When arguably two of the best female vocals in Korea combine for a performance, there are bound to be high expectations but what Ailee and Hyolyn accomplished together with their cover of Jessi J’s “Bang Bang” blew them all of the park. The vocals are incredibly strong from start to finish and Hyolyn singing in English was extremely impressive.
Chanyeol (EXO) and Punch
Fans of Korean drama Goblin will be able to recognise “Stay With Me” as one of the best songs from the OST. It’s an instant classic with an addictive chorus which has surpassed over 100 million views on YouTube.
2PM and Girls’ Generation
Older K-pop fans will remember that back in the day, 2PM and Girls’ Generation teamed up to promote Caribbean Bay, a new water park attraction at the time. The groups recorded a song called “Cabi Song” and even filmed a music video for it together. While the song isn’t anything special it’s just awesome to see these two heavyweight groups collaborate together which caused fans to go wild.
Big Byung consists of Jackson (GOT7), Sungjae (BTOB), N and Hyuk (VIXX). The group was formed as a part of television show Hitmaker where Jeong Hyeong-don and Defconn would write and produce songs of the group. Their first single “Stress Come On” is about the stresses of life while their second single “Ojingeo Doenjang” is about squid and soybean paste.
Vernon, Woozi, S. Coups (SEVENTEEN) and Ailee
SEVENTEEN only needed three of their members to create the catchy “Q&A” with vocal queen Ailee. It’s definitely one of the more under-rated collaborations that deserves more attention and is an incredible feel good track that should be given a chance. Give it a listen and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
SECHSKIES and Wanna One
For the 2017 MBC Music Festival, old and new generations combined for a memorable stage. SECHSKIES sang their mega hit “Couple” with members Wanna One. The result was a happy, feel good vibe would put a smile on any K-pop fan's face.
BIGBANG and Lee Hyori
One of the most memorable stages back in day when BIGBANG and Lee Hyori were in their prime back in 2008. The stage was a medley of BIGBANG and Lee Hyori’s hit songs which lasted for over 12 minutes and who could forget that kiss between T.O.P and Lee Hyori, a unforgettable moment in K-pop history.
