After months of cryptic announcements and non-music related reveals, BABYMETAL have returned. Ahead of the first show of their 2018 world tour in Kansas City today, the trio revealed a new song and video, their first since 2016. Watch the video for new number “Distortion” below.
One thing you might notice missing from the above clip is any sign of BABYMETAL themselves. Unlike previous videos, which focused on the three members of the group almost exclusively, “Distortion” sees them upping the CGI budget and focusing on other characters (the BABYMETAL Universe, if you will).
It boils down to seven fittingly metal characters — are these the “seven metal spirits” promised a while back? I’m going to assume so, but stay tuned on that front — fighting gigantic rock-like monsters and, eventually, a more vortex-like creature. It all takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, and I feel like this will be explained as part of their current tour (or maybe in their visual novel).
Don’t worry too much that the lack of BABYMETAL in the “Distortion” video might signal some sort of big change for the group, because the song itself fits just fine in the BABYMETAL song catalog. “Distortion” is a swift metal number featuring a beat just pulverizing forward and plenty of guitar heroics weaved in. Fitting for a song released right ahead of an arena tour, the vocals on “Distortion” are of the all-together-now shouted variety, complete with some throat-wreckers courtesy of some male voices. It’s notable for also being a pretty straight-ahead metal-style number, rather than something playing around with the whole J-pop-meets-loud-music defining their earlier work.
I’d expect more info to come out about the trio’s future plans as their current world tour unfolds, so keep an eye out for updates in the near future.
