The creator of iconic manga and animated movie Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo, will be producing a new anime series of the classic.
During the Los Angeles Anime Expo, Sunrise Inc announced the news, confirming there will be a new Akira animated series, as well as a new film from Otomo titled Orbital Era, which has been described as a near-future action adventure movie. The film will be Otomo's third feature following Akira and Steamboy, and he'll be writing, designing and directing it.
Otomo is also working to create Otomo: The Complete Works, with manga publisher Kodansha, which he will personally edit and arrange. It's set to include all his works in chronological order since 1971, to be published in Japanese and other languages.
Not only that, but Otomo has also announced that Akira will get a 2020 re-release in 4K remaster. It will screen in Japan April 24, 2020.
No schedule has been shared yet for when the new Akira series will be released, but fans are already beyond excited with #AKIRA trending worldwide on Twitter.
We can't wait to see it all!
