If you're looking for an intense Korean drama to kick off your 2020, look no further than Itaewon Class. The brand new show just started airing and it's already got us waiting on the edge of our seats for more episodes.

Based on a webtoon, it stars Park Seo Joon as Park Sae Ro Yi, who goes through hardships as a teen including the unjust death of his father, and ends up in prison. Once out, he tries to realise his dream of running a bar in Itaewon, and ends up with a ragtag group of friends trying to make their similar dreams come true.

It's an intense show so don't expect anything too light-hearted from the onset, but you're going to watch this drama for many reasons. Here's why we think you should add it to your watchlist!

1. Park Seo Joon's acting

Park Seo Joon is one of South Korea's top young actors and for good reason, he's got incredible range. You'll cry alongside him as he mourns his father's death, and you'll cheer for him as he tries to pull his life together despite the odds. With his character's key sense of justice, you can't help but be with him every step of the way.

2. Rage against the machine

Police corruption, conglomerate bribery... only a couple episodes in you'll realise this show is reflecting the real problems in society that are always under the surface. From rich men paying off police for their children's wrongdoings through to police who keep quiet when they should be doing their jobs, prepare yourself to be very angry watching the injustices occur.

3. All the hustle and bustle of Itaewon

If you've been to Seoul then you might've visited the heaving international district of Itaewon. It's well-known for being the multicultural hub of the city, with food and people from all over the world gathering there. The drama thrusts us right into the middle of it with an epic Halloween party, and we can expect even more of an insight into all the fun the neighbourhood has to offer in coming episodes.

4. An ensemble cast we can't wait to know better

The ensemble cast hasn't been revealed in the first two eps, but we can tell it's going to be huge. There's a diverse cast coming our way, and while the foundations are being laid for Park Seo Joon's romance with Kim Da Mi's character, we can't wait to get to know the other characters who'll be in our protagonist's life.

5. You can stream it in Australia right now!

Aussie fans don't need to wait, Netflix is streaming new episodes the day after they air in South Korea! You won't need to worry about internet spoilers and can keep up with it as it airs.

So have we convinced you to check out Itaewon Class?
