Dear Jenny,

I am a new mother and want to do everything I can so my daughter grows up to be successful. You raised gifted children, how did you do it and what are your tips?

Jenny: Firstly, I don’t think my children are gifted... until the school principal Mr Auricht hand-picked Benjamin and Michelle to go Tournament of Minds, which was this thing for gifted children! (I still have a Tournament of Minds t-shirt. $22. Pretty expensive.) The other siblings weren’t chosen, but they’re not stupid either. All my children have degrees! I do remember Benjamin would always come home and say, “School was boring.” School was never boring for me, but I saw on TV once that if kids say school is boring, apparently they’re gifted. Who knows?

I think I just raised my children naturally and encouraged them to try their best at everything they do. Don’t pressure your children. Instead, always encourage them. “What are you passionate about?” Looking back, I’d say I was the opposite of a Tiger Mum. And now look: I have three artists; one photographer and two writers. Artists struggle a lot, but even if you’re struggling, it doesn’t matter, as long as you’re happy. Remember: children can be gifted in other ways, because everyone is born with a gift. My talent? Being a professional mum, hahahahaha.
