The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warned today there are scammers impersonating government officials who threaten visa holders and citizens with deportation.

They claim these people have not filled out immigration forms correctly and request the payment of $1000 in order to have the form resubmitted.

In conversation with SBS Radio Hindi, ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard, gave some tips on identifying such scammers and advised listeners to call 1800 009 623 if they have any concerns about immigration scams.

Since February, the ACCC has received 150 reports of this scam that translated into more than $35,000 reported lost.
