What is Sheng Xiao?

The Chinese zodiac has nothing to do with constellations but is a folk practice for naming the years according to the lunar calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon. Although the Chinese have adopted the Western Gregorian calendar for over a century, the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as Lunar New Year. Different from the Western zodiac, the Chinese 12-part cycle refers to years, rather than months.

An easy way to see this system is that each year is represented by one animal (and one mythical creature, the dragon). There are 12 animals in a specific order, and the 12-animal-cycle rotates every 12 years.

In Sheng Xiao these animals are (in order): Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Ram), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
