1. What is the SBS National Languages Competition?
The SBS National Languages Competition 2019 is an exciting initiative to encourage and celebrate a love of learning languages in Australia. It’s a nationwide competition to engage all Australians and reflect on the cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity of Australia’s multicultural society.
SBS Radio encourages all Australians learning a language to participate in the ‘SBS National Languages Competition’ by sending us a drawing or writing that shows us ‘How does learning a language make a world of difference to you?’
This year’s competition is open to Australians of all ages who are learning a language, including those learning English.
2. Why are we doing it?
As the world’s most multicultural and multilingual broadcaster, SBS Radio is proud to run this fantastic competition to encourage Australians to explore and celebrate what it is to be an Australian. It celebrates diversity and contributes to the social inclusion and cross-cultural understanding of all Australians - linguistically, sociologically and culturally. It comes from the heart of SBS and speaks to our purpose of inspiring Australians to explore and celebrate diversity.
3. When does it start?
Competition entries are open from 09:00 on Monday 26 August 2019 (AEST) until 17:00 on Friday 29 September 2019 (AEST).
4. Who is eligible?
This year’s competition is open to Australian residents of all ages who are learning a language, including those learning English. The entrants are categorised into five groups:
5. How to enter?
Given the diversity of ages and skills, we encourage parents, guardians and school teachers to guide younger entrants where needed, in uploading their entry and filling out an entry form.
•For Entrants under 18, parents or guardians should tick the box to indicate they have read the Terms & Conditions for the competition.
•Entry is open from 09:00 on Monday 26 August 2019 (AEST) until 17:00 Friday 27 September 2019 (AEST).
•There can only be one submission per entrant. Group entries are accepted.
Entry is as simple as the following steps:
Step 1: Go to www.sbs.com.au/nlc19
Step 2: Fill in the form with your contact details.
•Entrants aged 4 – 7 years old and 8 – 12 years old must upload a drawing and include a caption of up to 30 words written in the language you are entering. You will also need to include an English translation answering the following question: “How does learning a language make a world of difference to you?” Please note that the English translation not included in the word count.
•Entrants aged 13 – 15 years old, 16 – 18 years old and 18+ must upload written answer inthe language you are learning as well as an English translation (not required for Englishlearners) in up to 100 words: “How does learning a language make a world of differenceto you?” Please note that the English translation not included in the word count.
Step 4: Submit your entry.
Do you attend a Community Languages Australia school? You can enter the competition through your language school. Talk to your teacher to find out how.
6. I am learning Auslan, can I participate?
Yes, the competition is open to learners of any language, including Auslan. Get creative and submit your drawing or written entry explaining how learning Auslan makes a world of difference to you.
7. What do participants win?
There will be five prize winners (one from each age category) who will receive:
•An Apple iPad Pro 12.9 inch 128GB (valued up to $1,757.90) for themselves.
•Apple AirPods with wireless charging case (valued up to $320.00) for themselves.
Winners will also be invited to attend the SBS National Languages Competition award ceremony at SBS headquarters in Sydney to be held in November 2019.
Selected winners who do not reside in NSW at the time of the above award ceremony will receive return airfares (for them and a parent/guardian) from their capital city and one night’s accommodation in Sydney to attend the ceremony.
In addition, there will be a weekly draw every Monday during the competition period (26 August – 27 September) where you can win an Apple Watch – Series 4 valued up to $600.00 (RRP).
All entries received by SBS by 23:59 on the Sunday night will go into a game of chance draw on Monday morning. If your entry is received by SBS in the first week you will be part of five weekly draws.
8. Helpful hints
Here are a few helpful hints when entering the competition:
•Some thought starters on your entry:
•Why did you decide to learn this language?
•What do you like about the language that you’re learning?
•Has learning a language opened you up to new possibilities and experiences?
•Get creative: Use humour, be playful, find a unique angle, etc.
•Choose the language you are entering in from the drop down box.
•Entering the competition is possible from any device - computer, mobile or iPad.
•Is your caption in a language other than English? Remember to include an English translation.
•Try to keep the English translation as accurate as possible.
•Have you filled out all sections of the entry form?
9. How is the SBS National Languages Competition judged?
Winning entries will be chosen for their uniqueness and creativity. For category A and B we will consider both the drawing and caption together. For category C, D and E the full written text will be considered.
Caption and text entries must be written in language as well as an English translation (not required for English learners)
If the entry does not meet the required criteria or in any manner promotes content that is disrespectful, we may choose to disqualify the entry. Please read the Terms and Conditions carefully.

Winners will be notified by email or phone in October 2019.
