The good news is - Marc Polmans secured his passage into round two with a 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Frenchman Ugo Humbert. It was the 23-year-old's first top-50 win.
The bad news, though, is that young gun Alexei Popyrin couldn't make it through as well.
The 21-year-old went down 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) against South Africa's Lloyd Harris.
Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic cleaned up Swede Mikael Ymer 6-0, 6-2, 6-3, big-hitting Italian 7th-seed Matteo Berrettini beat Vasek Pospisil in straight sets too, while Stefanos Tsitsipas came back from two sets down to defeat Jaume Munar.
In the women's draw, 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin survived a wobble to progress in three against Russian Ludmilla Samsonova, as did second seed Karolina Pliskova against Egypt's Mayar Sherif, while Laura Siegemund knocked out local Kristina Mladenovic with help from on controversial (incorrect) call involving a double bounce.
