Phanyapad Maha-Udomporn, or Jyb as he’s known, is an ultra-sculpted Thai model and fitness guru. He's also transgender, and has gone about setting up his own gym dedicated exclusively to trans men and the genderqueer.
Bangkok's Transfitgym opened its doors late last year and currently has a dedicated clientele of around 15. Mainly offering personal training sessions, the gym aims to help people who were born female to build the masculine bodies that reflect their true self.
Women who identify as lesbian or genderqueer are also welcome, and to create a safe space, all staff members are trans men.
Jyb tells Mashable that the inspiration behind the project was that he “wanted to help tomboys and trans men to have nice bodies”.
While same-sex marriage isn't legal in Thailand, the country is generally quite accepting of the LGBTQIA+ community, with Thai trans women or "katoey" being generally more visible and accepted in Thailand than in western society.
And while Thai trans men have yet accrue the same amount of international attention, Jyb tells Pri that it's a great time to be a trans man.
“In Thailand, acceptance for trans people has really shot up in the last five years,” he says. “Of course, you have old-fashioned thinkers who still say it’s wrong. But very few people from the young generation think this way.”
