BREAKING: The Labor Party has decided to formally vote against the Turnbull government's same-sex marriage plebiscite, leaving a huge question mark over the prospect of marriage equality in Australia.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said that he hadn't "heard a good argument emerge in the 11th hour for the plebiscite", arguing that the $200 million vote would be a waste of taxpayers' money.
