The creator of Australian drag icon Dame Edna Everage, Barry Humphries, has lashed out at Caitlyn Jenner over her gender transition, calling her a "publicity-seeking ratbag" and a "mutilated man".

The 81-year-old was defending Australian feminist academic Germaine Greer against accusations of transphobia in an interview with Britain's Telegraph.

“I agree with Germaine! You’re a mutilated man, that’s all,” Humphries said.

“Self-mutilation, what’s all this carry on? Caitlyn Jenner – what a publicity-seeking ratbag. It’s all given the stamp – not of respectability, but authenticity or something. If you criticise anything you’re racist or sexist or homophobic.”

Greer told the BBC in October last year that, in her opinion, transgender women are "not women", and that a great many women who are not transgender do not "look like, sound like or behave like women".

She was also the target of a petition to ban her from speaking at Cardiff University for a public lecture, citing her controversial views on transgender people.

Australian Greens Senator Janet Rice, who is married to a transgender woman, criticised Greer at the time, saying the author was out of touch with the community on the issue and that her views highlight the misinformed and transphobic comments many gender diverse people face every day.
