US actor Charlie Carver has come out in a five-part post on social media app Instagram, confirming he does "self-identify as gay".

The 27-year-old, better known as part of the 'Carver twins' who've appeared in shows together including Teen Wolf and The Leftovers, said that by omitting his sexuality he believed himself "complicit in perpetuating the suffering, fear, and shame cast upon so many in the world".

"In my silence, I’ve helped decide for you too that to be gay is to be, as a young man (or young woman, young anyone), inappropriate for a professional career in the Arts," he wrote.

"So now, let the record show this - I self-identify as gay. And let the record show my twin brother is just as cool for being straight."

Carver's twin brother, Max, shared Charlie's news on Twitter and wrote, "my brother has HUEVOS" the Spanish word for eggs, colloquially used to mean someone "has balls".

The Carver twins made their acting debut in Desperate Housewives as Porter and Preston Scavo, the sons to the characters played by Felicity Huffman and Doug Savant.

Fans and celebrities, including gay author Christopher Rice, have begun responding to the news on Twitter with good will and their best wishes.
