Three decades after winning his first Olympic gold medal and two decades after coming out as gay, US diver and LGBT rights activist Greg Louganis will appear on the Wheaties cereal box (along with retired athletes Edwin Moses and Janet Evans).
An honour that past Olympians and athletes have been bestowed with, Louganis’ inclusion comes down to his swag of four gold medals, but also gained a lot of attention from a petition with over 43,000 signatures.
While Mike Siemienas, manager of brand media relations at General Mills, commented that the choice was “not about who gets the most votes or who gets petitions”, Louganis has previously stated that his lack of appearance in the ‘80s and ‘90s was likely due to homophobia. However, his reaction to his current inclusion is far more positive.
He told General Mills, "I think it's really incredible to see how far we've come as far as human rights and acknowledging love, respect. I mean, I am legally married now to my husband and we've been married for two years... I never thought I'd see this day, really, we've come so far and to be able to celebrate that I think is really something very special."
Finally, every morning Louganis can enjoy eating a bowl of cereal with his face, staring back at him.
