Tegan and Sara's new album, Love You To Death, is set to drop in June, and the lead single "Boyfriend", dropped this morning.

In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple's Beats 1, Sara explained that the song is about her experience getting into a relationship with a girl who had never dated a woman before, and wanting to make it official with her before she was ready.

Describing the song as "a pretty straight forward pop song", Sara says that they "used to joke around that she was treating me like her boyfriend".

"I was trying to get her to, you know, tie it down," she reveals. "I wanted her to make it official with me."

While she says that the song may not seem "immediately relatable to everybody" because of the "gender twist", she hopes that everyone will be able to relate to "that situation where [you] really like someone and want to make it official and they're not ready".

"That's what the song is about. Hopefully it's universal and it appeals to a lot of different people."

Love You To Death will be released in Australia on June 3.
