Arrow and Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes has revealed he's gay in a wide-ranging interview with Entertainment Weekly covering his battle with mental illness and his decision to take a stop acting in the shows that made his career.
“It was a complete shock. I wasn’t ready to be back in the headlines,” Haynes told EW's Marc Snetiker.
At the time, the actor had already stepped back from starring in both TV shows that helped rocket him to fame in the US because of his struggle with anxiety.
“I asked to step away because I cared more about my mental and physical health than my career at the time,” he said.
“I’ve had terminal anxiety my entire life. Physically ill, fainting. I’m 27-years-old, and I have an ulcer. I had to step back.”
Haynes admits he thought he should have made a statement at the time of the Tumblr incident, but that he wasn't ready to talk about being gay.
"I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet. But I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said," he said.
“People want you to be that GQ image that you put out, but people don’t realise what it’s like to act 24 hours a day. I’d go home and I was still acting.
“People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realise that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.”
Haynes said that despite only speaking publicly about his sexuality now, he was openly gay in high school and to his friends, family and fellow cast members.
Haynes' former Teen Wolf co-star Charlie Carver also came out as gay in January this year.
