Saturday Night Live has been copping criticism after airing a joke in its fake news segment which touched on Tinder’s new transgender options.

“The dating app Tinder announced a new feature this week, which gives users 37 different gender identity options,” Comedian Colin Jost said in the segment.

“It’s called, ‘Why Democrats lost the election.’”

The reaction on social media was swift:

Jost was defensive on Twitter however, pointing to a New York Times piece which criticised progressive voters for attention to minority issues, and the Democratic party for engaging ‘identity politics’ – appealing to voters based on minority interests.

“In recent years American liberalism has slipped into a kind of moral panic about racial, gender and sexual identity that has distorted liberalism’s message and prevented it from becoming a unifying force capable of governing,” author Mark Lilla wrote.

Whether progressive Democrats have themselves to blame for the rise of Donald Trump in America is one of the many debates within the party in the wake of Trump’s shock victory earlier this month.

After promising to improve the Tinder experience for its trans and gender non-conforming users, the app updated its gender options a couple of weeks ago.

Where users had to select "male" or "female" before, the new update allows people to select from a range of new gender identities, including trans, trans man, trans woman and transgender – or to not select a gender at all.

Previously, trans Tinder users were reporting being kicked off the app because of their gender.

A statement on Tinder's website addressed this, saying that "no one will ever be banned from Tinder because of their gender."

“We’re really excited about the update and believe it is the right step to take as a company to create more meaningful connections between all our users,” said Tinder CEO Sean Rad.

“Everyone is welcome on Tinder.”
